Afterfeast of the Ascension
Seventh Sunday of Pascha
Holy Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council

Sunday Troparion, Tone 6: Angelic Hosts were above Thy tomb, * and they that guarded Thee became as dead. * And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. * Thou didst despoil hades and wast not tempted by it. * Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst grant us life. * O Thou Who didst rise from the dead, O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Troparion of the Ascension, Tone 4: Thou hast ascended in glory, O Christ our God, * having gladdened Thy disciples with the promise of the Holy Spirit; * and they were assured by the blessing * that Thou art the Son of God, * the Redeemer of the world.

Troparion of the Holy Fathers, Tone 8: Most glorified art Thou, O Christ our God, * Who hast established our holy fathers as luminous stars upon the earth, * and through them didst guide us all to the true Faith. * O Most-merciful One, glory be to Thee.

Kontakion of the Holy Fathers, Tone 8: The preaching of the apostles and the doctrines of the fathers confirmed the one Faith of the Church, * And wearing the garment of truth, woven from the theology on high, * She rightly divideth and glorifieth the great mystery of piety.

Kontakion of the Ascension, Tone 6: When Thou didst fulfill Thy dispensation for our sake, * uniting things on earth with the heavens, * Thou didst ascend in glory, O Christ our God, * departing not hence, but remaining inseparable from us, * and crying unto them that love Thee: * I am with you, and no one shall be against you.

Today’s Readings
Epistle: Acts 20:16-18a; 28-36
Gospel: John 17:1-13

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the First Canon of the feast, Fifth Tone:

Refrain:  Magnify, O my soul, Him Who hath ascended from earth to heaven, Christ the Giver of life.
Irmos:   Thee that art above understanding and word, the Mother of God, that hast ineffably brought forth in time the Timeless One, we the faithful with one accord magnify.

Parish News

 Next Sunday, Pentecost, we will be serving Vespers with the kneeling prayers immediately after Divine Liturgy. Pentecost is a great feast, so all should make their confession and prepare to receive Holy Communion.

 Remember that between Ascension and Pentecost the prayer “O Heavenly King” is not used, even at daily private prayers. The feast of the Ascension lasts through this Friday, so it is a good practice to chant the troparion and kontakion of the feast at morning and evening prayers, and to chant “Thee that art above understanding and word” instead of “It is truly meet”.

 This Wednesday’s akathist will be for the Holy Trinity, in preparation for Pentecost.

 Bishop George of Mayfield will be making an archpastoral visit to our parish June 19-20. He will be tonsuring John Kachelmeyer and Andrew Damiano as readers.

 Please remember in your prayers those who are or will be traveling: John Kachelmeyer, Ludmilla Ibarra, Marcus Bursik, and Phocas and Elana Damiano.

A TASTE OF ORTHODOXY
Sunday, May 16, 2010
5:00 -8:00 PM
Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church
200 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga, NY 14211

Join us for A Taste of Orthodoxy to sample foods from Orthodox countries, entertainment, and meet other local Orthodox Christians!  Featuring keynote speaker, IOCC Development Officer, Louis Zagami!  All proceeds to benefit the work of IOCC, 75% of which will be earmarked for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Haiti, and 25% will go to the IOCC general fund.

A free-will donation fund will be collected at the event (suggested amount $20.00). For more information contact Gabriella Damiano (716) 474-1127.

If you are visiting today:

 There are service books underneath the candle stand that you may borrow and follow along in. If you get lost, ask your neighbor to help you find the page.

 As you can see, we stand for most of the service. If you are not accustomed to this, please feel free to sit if you feel the need. No one will mind! You should still stand during the Scripture readings and when the priest comes through.

 In the Orthodox tradition, women cover their heads in church, and extra scarves can be borrowed from the candle stand at the entrance.

 You will see people making the sign of the cross and bowing. Feel free to follow suit or not, however you are comfortable. Again, no one will mind either way.

 Feel free to venerate (kiss) the icons and purchase a candle to light.

Commemoration slips for Orthodox, living and reposed, may be placed on the tray by the candle stand. Please write down how many prosphora you would like (suggested donation: $1/ea.)

 At the end of the service, you may come forward to venerate the hand-cross if you wish, but only the Orthodox may receive the antidoron (blessed bread).

 At our parish we do not pass a collection plate. Gifts are voluntary and can be left at the candle stand.

 Anyone who wishes to receive Holy Communion must be an Orthodox Christian and make their Confession beforehand. Please speak with Fr. Peter for more information.

Confessions are heard at all evening services.
