June 18/July 1, 2007

5th  Sunday After Pentecost

Martyr Leontius and those with him

Sunday Troparion, Tone 4: Having learned the joyful proclamation of the resurrection from the angel, * and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, * the women disciples of the Lord * spake to the apostles exultantly: * Death is despoiled * and Christ God is risen, * granting to the world great mercy.

Troparion of St. Theodore Stratelates, Tone 4: By true strategy, O trophy-bearer * thou wast an illustrious general of the Heavenly King, O Theodore. * For thou didst wisely arm thyself with the weapons of faith, * and didst utterly annihilate the hordes of demons, * and didst prove a victorious athlete, * wherefore with faith * we ever call thee blessed.

Troparion of St. Theodore the Tyro, Tone 2: Great are the triumphs of faith! * The holy martyr Theodore rejoiced in a fountain of flame as in refreshing water. * For having been made a whole burnt offering by fire, * he was offered as a sweetbread to the Trinity, * By his prayers, O Christ God, save our souls.

Troparion of St. Leontius, Tone 4:  In his sufferings O Lord, * Thy martyr Leontius hath received an imperishable crown from Thee, our God; * for, possessed of Thy might, * he set at nought his tormentors and crushed the feeble audacity of the demons. * By his supplications save Thou our souls.

Sunday Kontakion, Tone 4: My Savior and Redeemer hath as God * raised up the earthborn from grave and from their fetters, * and He hath broken the gates of hades, * and as Master * hath arisen on the third day.

Kontakion of St. Theodore Stratelates, Tone 2: Armed with faith and courage of soul, * and having taken in thy hand the Word of God as a spear, * thou didst conquer the enemy, * O glory of martyrs, Theodore. * With them cease not to intercede with Christ God for us all.

Kontakion of St. Theodore the Tyro, Tone 8: Having received the faith of Christ in thy heart as an inner shield, * thou didst overcome all the opposing forces, O great champion, * and thou hast been crowned with a heavenly crown, O Theodore, * for thou are eternally invincible.

Kontakion of St. Leontius, Tone 3:  Thou didst confound the wicked plots of the tyrants, * didst denounce the ungodly religion of the Greeks, * and didst shine forth the knowledge of God * upon all men * in thy doctrines of piety, * O divinely wise martyr. * Wherefore, with love we honor thy memory, * O all-wise Leontius.

Kontakion of the Theotokos, Tone 6: O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, * mediation unto the Creator most constant, * O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned, * but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, * who in faith cry unto thee: * Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, * thou who dost ever protect, * O Theotokos, them that honor thee.

“If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.”

                                    Epistle of St. James 3:2-10
