January 4/17, 2010
32nd Sunday After Pentecost
Forefeast of Theophany
Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles

Sunday Troparion, Tone 7: Thou didst destroy death by Thy Cross, * Thou didst open Paradise to the Thief. * Thou didst change the lamentation of the Myrrh-bearers, * and Thou didst command Thine Apostles * to proclaim that Thou didst arise, O Christ God, * and grantest to the world great mercy.

Troparion of the Forefeast, Tone 4:  Make ready, O Zebulon! * Adorn thyself, O Naphtali! * O River Jordan, leaping up, * receive thou the Master Who cometh to be baptized! * Rejoice, O Adam, with our first mother! * Hide not yourselves as ye did before in paradise; * for He that beheld you naked hath revealed Himself, * that He may clothe you in your primordial raiment. * Christ hath appeared, desiring to make all creation new!

Troparion of St. Theodore Stratelates, Tone 4: By true strategy, O trophy-bearer * thou wast an illustrious general of the Heavenly King, O Theodore. * For thou didst wisely arm thyself with the weapons of faith, * and didst utterly annihilate the hordes of demons, * and didst prove a victorious athlete, * wherefore with faith * we ever call thee blessed.

Troparion of St. Theodore the Tyro, Tone 2: Great are the triumphs of faith! * The holy martyr Theodore rejoiced in a fountain of flame as in refreshing water. * For having been made a whole burnt offering by fire, * he was offered as a sweetbread to the Trinity. * By his prayers, O Christ God, save our souls.

Troparion of the Apostles, Tone 3:  O holy Apostles, * intercede with the merciful God, * that He grant unto our souls forgiveness of offenses.

Sunday Kontakion, Tone 7: No longer will the dominion of death be able to keep men captive; * for Christ hath descended, demolishing and destroying the powers thereof. * Hades is bound; * the Prophets rejoice with one voice, saying: * A Savior hath come for them that have faith. * Come forth, ye faithful for the Resurrection.

Kontakion of St. Theodore Stratelates, Tone 2: Armed with faith and courage of soul, * and having taken in thy hand the Word of God as a spear, * thou didst conquer the enemy, * O glory of martyrs, Theodore. * With them cease not to intercede with Christ God for us all.

Kontakion of St. Theodore the Tyro, Tone 8: Having received the faith of Christ in thy heart as an inner shield, * thou didst overcome all the opposing forces, O great champion, * and thou hast been crowned with a heavenly crown, O Theodore, * for thou art eternally invincible.

Kontakion-Synaxis-Tone 2: In  h y m n s,  O ye faithful, let us divinely praise the choir of the seventy dis-c i –ples  of Christ; for through  t h e m   have we all learned to worship the indivisible  T r i n i t y.  And  t h e y   re-m a i n    b e a-cons of the  di-v i n e   Faith.

Kontakion of the Forefeast, Tone 4: In the streams of the Jordan today * the Lord cried to John: * Be not afraid to baptize Me, * for, I am come to save Adam, * the first-fashioned man.

Parish News

 Congratulations to Caitlin Strain, who is being baptized today, and to her sponsor, Elizabeth Marquardt! God grant you both many years!

 Anthony Rizvi will be made a catechumen at the end of Divine Liturgy today. Glory to God!

 Our annual parish meeting will take place on Sunday, February 7, after Divine Liturgy. All members in good standing must attend. If you are not yet a member of the parish, please speak with Natalie Moczerniak.

 Tomorrow, the Eve of Theophany, is a strict fast day as preparation for the feast.

 Services for Theophany: Vigil, Monday at 6:00pm; Divine Liturgy, Tuesday at 9:00am, followed by the Great Blessing of the Waters.

 Please sign up for a house blessing on the bulletin board. When Fr. Peter arrives, please have ready holy water, an icon and a candle. Ladies should have their heads covered.

 The new Bible Study on the Book of Revelation will begin next Sunday! The textbook we were going use is out of print, sorry to say. But a version of it is available online at: http://www.holytrinitymission.org/books/english/bible_new_testament.htm .

 Please remember in your prayers those traveling: Galina Bahanovich, Reader George Hammond, and Anthony, Gabriella, Timothy and Michael Damiano.

If you are visiting today:

 There are service books underneath the candle stand that you may borrow and follow along in. If you get lost, ask your neighbor to help you find the page.

 As you can see, we stand for most of the service. If you are not accustomed to this, please feel free to sit if you feel the need. No one will mind! You should still stand during the Scripture readings and when the priest comes through.

 In the Orthodox tradition, women cover their heads in church, and extra scarves can be borrowed from the candle stand at the entrance.

 You will see people making the sign of the cross and bowing. Feel free to follow suit or not, however you are comfortable. Again, no one will mind either way.

 Feel free to venerate (kiss) the icons and purchase a candle to light. Commemoration slips for Orthodox, living and reposed may be placed on the tray by the candle stand. Please write down how many prosphora you would like (suggested donation: $1/ea.)

 At the end of the service, you may come forward to venerate the hand-cross if you wish.

 At our parish we do not pass a collection plate. Gifts are voluntary and can be left at the candle stand.

Anyone who wishes to receive Holy Communion must be an Orthodox Christian and make their Confession beforehand. Please speak with Fr. Peter for more information.

Confessions are heard at all evening services.
