(Meatfare Sunday)
Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia
Sunday Troparion, Tone 2: When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, * then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. * And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, * all the hosts of the heavens cried out: * O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee!
Troparion of the New Martyrs, Tone 4: O ye holy hierarchs, royal passion-bearers and pastors, * monks and laymen, men, women and children, * ye countless new-martyrs, confessors, blossoms of the spiritual meadow of Russia, * who have borne fruit for Christ in your endurance: * Entreat Him, as the One that planted you, * that He deliver His people from godless and evil men, * and that the Church of Russia be made steadfast * through your blood and suffering, * unto the salvation of our souls.
Kontakion of the New Martyrs, Tone 2: O ye new passion-bearers of Russia, * who have with your confession finished the course of this earth, * receiving boldness through your sufferings: * Beseech Christ Who suffered for you, * that they who pray to you in the hour of the testing of their faith * may receive the gift of courage. * For ye are a witness to us who kiss your feet, * that neither tribulation, prison, nor death * can separate us from the love of God.
Kontakion of the Last Judgment, Tone 1: When Thou, O God, shalt come to earth with glory, * and all things tremble, * and the river of fire floweth before the Judgment Seat * and the books are opened, and the hidden things made public, * then deliver me from the unquenchable fire * and deem me worthy to stand at Thy right hand, O most righteous Judge.

Today and next Sunday we are taking up the annual collection for Holy Trinity Seminary. Please give generously.
Today is “Meatfare” – no more meat until Pascha, unless you have a blessing otherwise. This week is Cheesefare, which means that one may eat eggs, dairy and fish every day, including Wednesday and Friday.
Today we are holding our annual parish meeting. All are welcome to attend, but only members in good standing may vote. We will be voting for the position of secretary and a lay position. We will also be voting on this year’s budget.
Please remember on Wednesday and Friday of this week to recite the Prayer of St. Ephraim at your morning and evening prayers.
This Wednesday we will chant the Akathist for the Holy Hierarchs: St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom.
This Friday at 6:00pm (please note the time) we will serve the pannychida for the fortieth day since the repose of our departed sister in Christ, Leonilla (Lillian Williams), followed by a meal in her honor. Memory eternal!
Next week we go onto the Lenten schedule. Please refer to the parish calendar.
Next Sunday is both the great feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple and Forgiveness Sunday. We will serve the Blessing of Candles at the end of Divine Liturgy and then we will immediately begin Vespers with the Rite of Forgiveness
Please remember in your prayers those traveling: Galina Bahanovich and Valentina Jaffri. Galina had successful angioplasty performed on Thursday. Glory to God!
Alas, black soul! How long wilt thou continue in evil? How long wilt thou lie in idleness? Why dost thou not think of the fearful hour of death? Why dost thou not tremble at the dread judgment seat of the Savior?
What defense then wilt thou make, or what wilt thou answer? Thy works will be there to accuse thee; Thine actions will reproach thee and condemn thee. O my soul, the time is near at hand; Make haste before it is too late, and cry aloud in faith: I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned against Thee; But I know Thy love for man and Thy compassion. O good Shepherd, deprive me not of a place at Thy right hand in Thy
great mercy. (Apostikhon at Vespers) If you are visiting today: There are service books underneath the candle stand that you may borrow and follow along in. If you get lost, ask your neighbor to help you find the page. As you can see, we stand for most of the service. If you are not accustomed to this, please feel free to sit if you feel the need. No one will mind! You should still stand during the Scripture readings and when the priest comes through. In the Orthodox tradition, women cover their heads in church, and extra scarves can be borrowed from the candle stand at the entrance. You will see people making the sign of the cross and bowing. Feel free to follow suit or not, however you are comfortable. Again, no one will mind either way. Feel free to venerate (kiss) the icons and purchase a candle to light. Commemoration slips for Orthodox, living and reposed may be placed on the tray by the candle stand. Please write down how many prosphora you would like (suggested donation: $1/ea.) At the end of the service, you may come forward to venerate the hand-cross if you wish. At our parish we do not pass a collection plate. Gifts are voluntary and can be left at the candle stand. Anyone who wishes to receive Holy Communion must be an Orthodox Christian and make their Confession beforehand. Please speak with Fr. Peter for more information.
