First Sunday of Great Lent
The Triumph of Orthodoxy

Sunday Troparion, Tone 4:  Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the angel, * and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, * the women disciples of the Lord spake to the apostles exultantly: * Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, * granting to the world great mercy.

Troparion for the Triumph of Orthodoxy, Tone 2: We venerate Thine immaculate Icon, O Good One, * asking the forgiveness of our failings, O Christ God; * for of Thine Own will Thou wast well-pleased to ascend the Cross in the flesh, * that Thou mightest deliver from slavery to the enemies those whom Thou hadst fashioned. * Wherefore, we cry to Thee thankfully: * Thou didst fill all things with joy, O our Savior, * when Thou camest to save the world.

Kontakion for the Triumph of Orthodoxy, Tone 8: The Uncircumscribable Word of the Father was circumscribed when He took flesh of thee, O Theotokos; and when He had restored the defiled image to its ancient state, He suffused it with divine beauty. As for us, confessing our salvation, we record it in deed and word.

Today’s Readings
Epistle: Hebrews 11:24-26; 32-12:2a
Gospel: John 1:43-51

Parish News

 Glory to God for a beautiful parish feast yesterday!

 At the Great Entrance we are commemorating Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger who tragically died at the Olympic Games in Vancouver.

 The Council of Orthodox Churches on the Niagara Frontier is sponsoring the Annual Lenten Lecture Series with Vespers service chanted by the Pan-Orthodox Choir. Tonight’s Vespers will begin at 5:00pm at St. George Antiochian Church in Lewiston. Fr. Paul Solberg will speak on the Sacrament of Chrismation.

 This week’s Lenten services: Tues. at 6:30pm: Matins and Hours; Wednesday at 6:30pm: Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. Those who made their confession this weekend may receive Holy Communion on Wednesday, if they perform their prayer rule and attend Matins and Hours. You also need to be fasting from 10:00am.

 This Saturday at 9:30am, Bishop Daniel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church USA will be serving the Divine Liturgy at the Hellenic Church of the Annunciation. After a free lunch, His Grace will give a talk on the services of Holy Thursday.

 Remember to include the Prayer of St. Ephraim in your morning and evening prayers Sunday night through Friday morning.

 Remember that almsgiving is just as integral a part of Great Lent as fasting is. Some suggestions:

If you are visiting today:

 There are service books underneath the candle stand that you may borrow and follow along in. If you get lost, ask your neighbor to help you find the page.
 As you can see, we stand for most of the service. If you are not accustomed to this, please feel free to sit if you feel the need. No one will mind! You should still stand during the Scripture readings and when the priest comes through.
 In the Orthodox tradition, women cover their heads in church, and extra scarves can be borrowed from the candle stand at the entrance.
 You will see people making the sign of the cross and bowing. Feel free to follow suit or not, however you are comfortable. Again, no one will mind either way.
 Feel free to venerate (kiss) the icons and purchase a candle to light. Commemoration slips for Orthodox, living and reposed may be placed on the tray by the candle stand. Please write down how many prosphora you would like (suggested donation: $1/ea.)
 At the end of the service, you may come forward to venerate the hand-cross if you wish.
 At our parish we do not pass a collection plate. Gifts are voluntary and can be left at the candle stand.
Anyone who wishes to receive Holy Communion must be an Orthodox Christian and make their Confession beforehand. Please speak with Fr. Peter for more information.

Confessions are heard at all evening services.
