Христос Воскресе!
Воистину Воскресе!

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

April 12/25, 2010
4th  Sunday of Pascha
Healing of the Paralytic

Troparion of the Resurrection, Tone 3: Let the heavens be glad; let earthly things rejoice; * for the Lord hath wrought might with his arm. * He hath trampled down death by death; * the firstborn of the dead hath He become. * From the belly of Hades hath he delivered us * and hath granted to the world great mercy.

Kontakion of the Paralytic, Tone 3: As of old Thou didst raise the paralytic, O Lord, * by Thy divine presence, raise my soul, * which is paralyzed grievously by all manner of sins and unseemly deeds, * that being saved I may cry out: * O compassionate Christ, glory be to Thy power.

Kontakion of the Resurrection, Tone 8:  Thou didst descend into the tomb, O Immortal, * Thou didst destroy the power of death. * In victory didst Thou arise, O Christ God, * proclaiming “Rejoice!” to the myrrh-bearing women; * granting peace to Thine apostles, * and bestowing resurrection on the fallen.

Today’s Readings
Epistle: Acts 9:32-42
Gospel: John 5:1-15

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the Canon of the feast, first Tone:
Refrain:  The angel cried unto her that is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin! And again I say, rejoice!  For thy Son is risen from the grave on the third day, and hath raised the dead, O ye people, be joyful!
Irmos:   Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee; dance now and be glad, O Zion, and do thou exult, O pure Theotokos, in the arising of Him Whom thou didst bear.

 Fish may be eaten this Wednesday, Mid-Pentecost.

 This Wednesday’s Akathist will be for the Resurrection of Christ. We had quite a good turnout last week!

 The Bible study on Revelation will continue today. All are welcome!

 Next Sunday we will serve our monthly moleben for the non-Orthodox at the end of Divine Liturgy.

 Please remember in your prayers those traveling: Reader George Hammond has a job interview in Virginia, and John Kachelmeyer has job training on Long Island.

A free will donation fund will be collected at the event (suggested amount $20.00). For more information contact Gabriella Damiano (716) 474-1127.

If you are visiting today:

 There are service books underneath the candle stand that you may borrow and follow along in. If you get lost, ask your neighbor to help you find the page.
 As you can see, we stand for most of the service. If you are not accustomed to this, please feel free to sit if you feel the need. No one will mind! You should still stand during the Scripture readings and when the priest comes through.
 In the Orthodox tradition, women cover their heads in church, and extra scarves can be borrowed from the candle stand at the entrance.
 You will see people making the sign of the cross and bowing. Feel free to follow suit or not, however you are comfortable. Again, no one will mind either way.
 Feel free to venerate (kiss) the icons and purchase a candle to light. Commemoration slips for Orthodox, living and reposed may be placed on the tray by the candle stand. Please write down how many prosphora you would like (suggested donation: $1/ea.)
 At the end of the service, you may come forward to venerate the hand-cross if you wish.
 At our parish we do not pass a collection plate. Gifts are voluntary and can be left at the candle stand.
 Anyone who wishes to receive Holy Communion must be an Orthodox Christian and make their Confession beforehand. Please speak with Fr. Peter for more information.

Confessions are heard at all evening services.
